Let Big Cabins take care of your Large Group Retreat

The event, which carries a small daily fee, has become a local favorite for its cultural uniqueness will begin with a parade down the parkway in Gatlinburg at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 14. All Scots are invited to participate in the parade, which is followed by a gala reception at the Quality Inn Creekside.

On Saturday and Sunday beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Mills Park, the Scottish Games will feature professional and amateur athletes competing in many different events including tossing the Scottish haggis, turning the caber, Highland wrestling and the manhood stones.

On Sunday, beginning at 1:45 p.m., the festival will commence with its first ever Scottish dog parade and talent show. The parade and talent show is open to anyone who purchases a ticket and brings their dog on a short leash.

Cutthroat Shamrock, Colin Grant-Adams, Albannach and Thistledown Tinkers are among the entertainment during the popular two-day festival.

There will be an assortment of pipe and drum bands competing in individual and band events for prize money, competition of dozens of Highland dancers from across the country and border collie demonstrations. More than 30 Scottish Clans will be on hand to assist visitors in finding their heritage. At least 20 vendors will offer wares ranging from Scottish clothing to a sampling of Scottish foods.

The Best Hotels in Gatlinburg TN

The upper-level rooms of the Buckberry Lodge have wood-burning fireplaces while the lower rooms have gas fireplaces. The views of the Smoky Mountains off the balconies are simply breathtaking. Even the dining room has a balcony that you can have a romantic meal on and enjoy the incredible scenery. Before dinner, you may feel like working up an appetite and taking a romantic stroll down the half-mile trail to a creek that has a pavilion and fire pit for you to enjoy.

Other amenities of The Lodge at Buckberry Creek include free internet and a continental breakfast. The dinner has gotten great reviews even though the prices are on the high side…everyone we talk to says that it’s worth it! As far as the rates go, they range from $180-$460 a night (last we checked), so this may not be geared towards families or budget-minded vacations. Granted, there are many cabin rentals cabins that have rates similar to this, but the Lodge at Buckberry Creek is constantly rated high for their service, quality, and offerings. You simply won’t find a better “hotel” experience in the Gatlinburg, TN. If you do, be sure to let us know!

An unfortunate, growing trend in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge is the break-ins and burglary of cabins, cabin rentals, and chalets. If you have stayed in a cabin in the Smoky Mountains and have never experienced this or even heard of it, then consider yourself blessed. There are quite a few horror stories of people having items stolen while the cabin rental companies do very little to assist since there are so many cases of cabin breakins and robbery.

If you are planning on staying in a cabin during your next visit, do not let this scare you or change your mind about your accommodations. Cabins are still the most popular places to stay and offer a more enjoyable vacation than most of the hotels or motels in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. Here are a few tips to help you avoid a cabin breakin experience.

• Ask your cabin rental company what their policy is on breakins or robberies. Do they offer insurance or reimbursement of any kind? Most likely they don’t, but it’s worth asking for ahead of time
• Ask the cabin company about any recent thefts and ask for a cabin with no theft history or that is a low-candidate for theft…this could mean that it is surrounded by other cabins, located closer to town, upgraded locks, etc
• While you are staying in the cabin, minimize risk by making absolutely certain that you either take valuables with you whenever you leave or lock them in a safe if one is supplied by the cabin rental company (assuming it’s a locked-down safe that cannot be carried easily)

As much as you would like to feel that cabin rental companies are on your side, most of them have policies that you need to be aware of:

• “Any cabin that is left unsecured by the guest, resulting in items being damaged or stolen, will be the responsibility of the registered guest. He/she will incurr the cost of replacing any items which are damaged or stolen.“
• “Neither the owner nor (the cabin rental company) will be responsible for accidents or injury to guests or for loss of money or valuables of any kind. The registered guest assumes full responsibility for any and all damages that his/her group causes…or for any items found to be missing after his/her group’s visit…”

Needless to say, most cabin rental companies seem more concerned about themselves and the owners of the cabins than they are the guests. You basically assume responsibility of all property during your stay so be aware. This isn’t meant to change your mind about staying in a cabin during your next visit, but you need to be aware of possible risks that would otherwise ruin a perfect vacation to Gatlinburg, TN and the Great Smokey Mountains. This information also applies to cabin rentals in Pigeon Forge, TN. Occupied cabins rarely experience break-ins, however, thieves have a pattern of looking for cabins with no cars out front or people staying in them.

*UPDATE* Oct 25, 2007 – An arrest has been made that has connected a person to 31 burglaries of cabins where numerous LCD and Plasma TVs were stolen along with other items over the past several months. This will hopefully reduce or even eliminate the string of breakins and ease some anxiety over staying in a cabin.
